In the art class I teach, this week we will be talking about the Lascaux Caves in France. These ancient caves contain drawings that date back to the Prehistoric Age. They were discovered by five boys and their dog when they were out exploring one afternoon.

I love this story because it was a childhood dream of mine to find something undiscovered in the woods where we played. Discovering a piece of a broken dish buried in the dirt was about the extent of my finds. Something about this broken piece of porcelain though and the story it held, fascinated me, and gave my imagination lots of room to wander.

I think we are God-wired to need this kind of space for exploration and wonder. We need time to ponder our smallness and also the big wild world we are apart of. It’s when I connect the reality of my smallness to all God’s bigness that my soul starts to quiet and settle into the knowledge that all is well. Knowing that God has gone before me and goes beyond me; that there is a plan and that He is the orchestrator of it all, leads me to a place of letting go. It allows me to just be. And in that ‘being’’ space I am starting to see, there is a lot more to explore right inside of me.
