The Promised Land

The Promised Land

By Susie Teramura

I think

I am

In the

Where it’s dry and

It looks like

Nothing is growing.

Where hot winds

Blow bare grass

And things feel

I think

I am

In the

Because I feel

Numb, a little.

So used to the view

I am not even

Looking anymore,

Just walking, trudging,

Moving forward.

Maybe it’s because

I have been

Reading about

His Exodus

And thinking on that

And how

You told him

To go,

You’d show him

But for a while, anyway,

He ended up

In the wilderness

Instead, and

Questioned You

And what

You were up to.

And I guess

I am too.

How I got here

And If I will

Ever get there

To that

Promised land,

The place

To settle and

Call my

Then I start

Do I want stuff,

And comfort

And fun

Or do I want to

Be with You,

The Holy One,

Is life found in

Circumstances right

And a comfortable life,

Or am I content

With just You

By my side.

Because the

Thing I have found

As the hot wind blows

Is that You, Jesus,

Never let go.

You are here

In my wilderness too

And maybe,

That Promised Land

Isn’t reallly a place,

It’s just being

With You.

You are

The rich soil

Where my heart

Can take root.

You are

My drink and

Satisfying food.

You are

My friend and

Best company.

You are

The one who

All my needs

So no matter where

My feet

May go

I know

I will Never

Be alone,

For You

Dear Jesus

Are the Promised Land,

    And my forever

Psalm 21:6

” For you make him most blessed forever; you make him glad with the joy of your presence.”

“For You make him to be blessed and a blessing forever; You make him exceedingly glad with the joy of Your presence.”

“You have given him blessings that will last forever.  You have given him the joy of being near you.”

    Genesis 28:15

“Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

    1. Hi Elaine! so nice to hear from you!! I hope you and your family are doing well! Thanks for visiting my blog and for your encouraging words! I was so happy to see your name in my email box. Love and hugs

  1. My heart smiled as soon as I saw your new posts in my email, Susie. As always, I am touched by your poem. I can feel that hot wind blowing in the wilderness and that comfort that Jesus holds us up and never lets go. I love how you learned that maybe the Promised Land is not a place but a being with Jesus. Yes, He is the only One who can fill all our needs. Thank you so much for sharing your reflections! Love and hugs to you!

  2. Susie,
So glad to see this post and hear your lovely words again! Oh how I can relate to seasons in the wilderness, feeling parched and walking forever on the same dusty road! And I’ve had to ask myself the same question if I want more of God, or more of what I’m waiting or praying for and I realize the wilderness shows me I want more of him. I’ve even gotten to think of those desperate and dusty times in a different light because that’s where I experience God more vibrantly and more deeply than anywhere else. Always thinking and praying for you and so glad to hear your words today! xoxo

    1. Hi Valerie! oh so good to connect here with you! Thank you for understanding!! So true that these wilderness times in retrospect, are some of the sweetest ones with Him, and I think they are growth spurts in disguise 🙂 Thanks so much for the thoughts and prayers! Me and my family can use them now as we head into a season of three kids graduating (two college and one high school) and a wedding coming! I hope all is well in sunny florida and with you! So thankful for your friendship and all the lovely things from your heart you always are so kind to share on your blog! with love and hugs! 🙂

  3. I love seeing your thoughts as always! God seems to bring us to these desert places where there is nothing but Him to show us He is all we need. I am learning it too and learning to lean in.

    1. Hi Sarah! (Happy birthday to your daughter!! 🙂 So fun to see your beautiful family on Instagram!!” Leaning in” is a great way to think of it- towards Him in trust in dependence and putting full weight on Him even when we don’t understand– so good! Thank you for that and for understanding! – thanks for visiting me too- means so much!! xo
