Bigger Than Me

Weekend road trip

To visit

Our college kids,

To adventure and

Do life

With them.

After breakfast bagels,

And a campus tour,

They take us

To another

Favorite spot

That we have

To hike to.

Trying to keep up

And not stumble

Over roots

And large rocks

I struggle,

Feeling my age

And my

Heart beating hard,

Over and around,

Up and up, I follow

The voices and

The laughter,

Unaware of exactly

What all this is for

Unaware of our

Final destination.

And finally, legs

Burning and

Cheeks flushed

Red from the February air

We crest the hill

And see it there.

At the top

Of Cole mountain

Mountain upon mountain

As far as the

Eye can see

Wispy clouds on

A back drop of

Light blue mixed

With tangerine.

The Sun sinks low,

Making everything sparkle.

This breathtaking beauty,

Settles down in my heart.

Struggling hard to find

The words or a

Camera angle to

Capture it all.

“It’s just too big,”

I think,

Too big and

Wide and


Too amazing to

Stuff into words

Or snap

Into a pic

And I start

Feeling small

And I think

Of You

You are like

This view!

Too big and

Amazing to capture

To package

Or box up

Or label.

And I start thinking

And thanking You

For being big

So I can be small

For being smart

So I don’t have

To know it all

For being strong

Because I know

I am weak

For being

Kind on days

I am just mean.

Oh God and maker

Of these mountains

I see

I am so thankful

You are bigger

Than me.

The sun sinks low

It’s time to go

Back down the mountain

And into the car

And quietly I tuck

Into my heart

Thoughts of

Those mountains

And how amazing

You are.

  1. Such beautiful thoughts and photo, Susie. I know what you mean about photos. Sometimes when I look back at them, I think of how a photo just doesn’t capture that awe we feel when we see it in front of us. Thank you so much for encouraging me today with the reminder that God is too big and too amazing to capture or box up. I, too, am so grateful He is so big, bigger than us and any troubles we may go through.

    I assume the person on the right is your hubby, then you? What are the names of your children? Are there two or three in college now? Love and hugs to you!

    1. Hi Trudy! Yes that is him and I have the red hat on. Our two college kids are on the far left.( Zach and Hannah) Annie is in the middle in High school and Zoe is the youngest! I am so glad he is so big too- It is a comfort to me that I can just rest because he is big enough to take care of things. It was so beautiful up there! My kids are so blessed to go to school where they are encouraged in their faith and near so much beauty!! Sending love and hugs tonight!

    1. Hi Elaine! 🙂 Yes they were – I was surprised how far we could see! The kids said this was the easiest hike and so I somehow thought it would be pretty but it surpassed my expectation! I hope you are doing well and getting ready to welcome spring! Spring has sprung here- already seeing cherry blossoms and daffodils! with love xo

  2. The photo is just gorgeous Susie! I loved this account of your mountain climbing adventure and how you are feeling your age (me too!!!) and how the scene just made you think of the majesty of God. Isn’t that how it is sometimes? Sometimes the vista points us to God and not only what he’s made, but what he’s done for us — and somehow I think that’s always how it was supposed to be, from the time of creation, don’t you think? So glad you had an amazing time with your kids! xoxox

  3. Hi Valerie! Yes so well said! so true- Just hard to put words on it all when I see stuff like this! But I am thankful sometimes to be small in His big hands and loved deeply by His big heart! I hope you have a very special time in Rome! Praying you will be refreshed by something new and perfect and just what your heart needs!
