Bigger Than Me

Weekend road trip

To visit

Our college kids,

To adventure and

Do life

With them.

After breakfast bagels,

And a campus tour,

They take us

To another

Favorite spot

That we have

To hike to.

Trying to keep up

And not stumble

Over roots

And large rocks

I struggle,

Feeling my age

And my

Heart beating hard,

Over and around,

Up and up, I follow

The voices and

The laughter,

Unaware of exactly

What all this is for

Unaware of our

Final destination.

And finally, legs

Burning and

Cheeks flushed

Red from the February air

We crest the hill

And see it there.

At the top

Of Cole mountain

Mountain upon mountain

As far as the

Eye can see

Wispy clouds on

A back drop of

Light blue mixed

With tangerine.

The Sun sinks low,

Making everything sparkle.

This breathtaking beauty,

Settles down in my heart.

Struggling hard to find

The words or a

Camera angle to

Capture it all.

“It’s just too big,”

I think,

Too big and

Wide and


Too amazing to

Stuff into words

Or snap

Into a pic

And I start

Feeling small

And I think

Of You

You are like

This view!

Too big and

Amazing to capture

To package

Or box up

Or label.

And I start thinking

And thanking You

For being big

So I can be small

For being smart

So I don’t have

To know it all

For being strong

Because I know

I am weak

For being

Kind on days

I am just mean.

Oh God and maker

Of these mountains

I see

I am so thankful

You are bigger

Than me.

The sun sinks low

It’s time to go

Back down the mountain

And into the car

And quietly I tuck

Into my heart

Thoughts of

Those mountains

And how amazing

You are.

 Pink hearts and boxes of

Chocolate squares

Carmel, cherry

Orange cream,

Toasted coconut

And the pecan turtle,

Sit pretty in pleated tissue cups.


Dozens of roses, red,

Cards and candy hearts,

And words like,

U R Cute,

Be Mine,

It’s Valentines,


A day to celebrate


And You,

Because You are


That’s who You are.


And I think about that,

And all the ways You’ve

Romanced me,

Inviting me

To come away with You,

To find my voice,

To dance,

And to live free,


You’ve found Your way

Into my deepest parts,

Holding me there

When I’m falling apart,


You have

Captured my heart

Tucking it in

Safe, next to Yours

Forever together,

No matter the weather,

You and me,

For all time,
