You are My Help

By Susie Teramura

The to- do list bulges,

And pushes,

Spilling into a

To do

Notebook,

With pages

And tabs

And notes now

Scribbled down,

So as not to forget,

And before I can cross

One thing off

5 more things

Are added,

Like bunnies

Multiplying at light speed,

And then the needs

Coming from places

Not meant for lists

From places of the heart

Coming out

In tears and anger,

And hurts longing

For healing,

Reminding me that

I am out of control

That I cannot fix

These broken things

And broken ones-

My limited resources

And views

And own scarred places

Stretched thin-

Worn through

And not enough.

This is where

I find you again

Pulling me out

From under the pile

You remind me

Where my help

Comes from.

My help

Comes from

You

God of all the universe,

Maker of the skies,

And sea,

And even, me

You, God, promise

To help me,

To assist me,

To provide

All that I need,

Every bit.

You are

Beside me,

In me,

And all

Around me,

Limitless God.

Not bound by time or strength,

Able to make

Something out of nothing,

You are making

A way for me.

With you God

All things are possible.

You enable me,

And invite me,

To watch you work,

You make

My hands skilled,

You make

My words wise,

You make

My heart kind,

And provide patience

Once again,

And at then end of the day

When I am

Exhausted and fall

In a heap,

On my pillow hard,

I find you near

Loving me,

Singing me to sleep with

The sweetness

Of your voice,

And  your gentle presence,

You, God,

Are my help

My everything,

Staring at that list again,

My heart begins to lift.

And I cannot help but

Begin to laugh a bit.

This list

Is in your hands,

And I am too,

As are those precious

Ones of mine,

I breathe deep

And smile

It’s all going

To turn out

Just fine.

My God will

Come through again

He is always on time!

  1. Susie,
Our to-do lists kind of rule our days, don’t they? And I’m sure yours as a mom, seem endless! Your words ring true that even though what we have to do seems overwhelming, it’s just the opportunity for God to handle it in ways that are surprising and make us aware of how much he really does care for us when he offers us his strength. My favorite line? “With you God, all things are possible.” I truly believe that! xo

  2. Valerie- Yes they do! And i often (when I am feeling unproductive) make lists of things I have already done just to be able to cross something out! (like brush teeth and make bed) hahaha! I often feel i am in way over my head, and have no idea how its all gonna work out or be ok- but He has proved faithful over and over. He gives hope and does make the impossible possible!! sending love tonight 🙂

  3. The list is in His hand. That’s just what I need to be reminded of. I keep juggling my daily to-do list to make room here and there. But I need to just hand it over and say scramble it as you will!

  4. I love the contrast to God’s limitless nature to how we are limited as people. I loved this post, it was truly a blessing for me. Be blessed and have a great weekend!
