Things That Last

By Susie Teramura

Lately it seems,

I am tired most

Of the time.

Days cycle like

The laundry and dishes,

Never ending,

And sometimes

The in monotony of it,

I almost

Miss the joy.

The socks dirtied by fun,

Rolled up

On the floor,

Carried by the dog, again,

Out the door.

Now lying in the grass,

Welcome all

Who enter here to

Our sacred home,

Where life is happening.

And I breathe deep,

And realize,

And let it sink in,

That this life is You,

And Your gift to me.

Where things are

Tidy and perfect,

And neat as a pin,

Not much life is getting in.

So I rest in the chaos of it,

All the stuff,

And the thoughts,

And problems that circle

Heavy around my heart,

And go back

To the beginning,

And to where

Things start.

When I am tired and,

At my end

That is where

You take over

And life can begin,

And where I hear Your

Heart beating for me,

And see Your love

Lavished on my family.

So I will depend

On you this day,

To hold me up,

And lead the way,

And when I see

That sock

Out in the grass,

I will remember

“This too shall pass,”

And that in these trials

You are building things

That last.

James 1:2-3

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.

1 Peter 1:6-7

In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

  1. “Where things are tidy and neat as a pin, not much life is getting in”-what a great reminder to me as my house is constantly dirty with the life of three little ones! If I can just remember when the house is constantly messy that its because life is happening! Thanks for the encouragement today. Visiting from Holley Gerth.

    1. Yes! Mine is too! 🙂 ! Having one off to college helps keep things in perspective though sometimes- I miss him and his stuff reminds me of his presence here- So God is softening my heart towards the stuff a bit! 🙂 I know I will miss it in a few years! 🙂 Thanks so much for stopping by and visiting me today! Blessings to you!

  2. so,so good Susie — I like the rhyming in this and sock thoughts and “this too shall pass” and “sacred home” — and Scriptures, yes, it speaks to me

  3. Susie,
Beautiful — when you see the sock in the grass you’ll remember that this too shall pass! Today is one of those days for me when I woke up tired and dragged myself to work, then snapped at my coworkers and feel the cubicle stifle me . . . but what a breath of fresh air to read your words and let them sink into my soul . . . grateful for today, and yes all too soon this will pass so I will start again and try to find the joy in today . .. love this, friend! 🙂

  4. Oh Susie I love this one!!! I so needed this today. Thank You. I get so tangled up in the domestic day to day stuff that I sometimes forget who I am in Christ and all that He has for me today. Life in God really is so much more than a to-do-list.

    1. Hi Lisa- So glad to meet you! I am glad this spoke to your heart- I forget this too all the time- I was thinking today that this is maybe why I am blogging – to remind myself again and again and again -in hopes that someday it will sink it!! hahaha- Life in God is wonderful- real life isn’t it! So glad to have met you today! 🙂
